인니 1월 석탄수출 금지...정부 "국내 영향 제한적"
Indonesia's plans to ban coal exports in January is a concerning development for South Korea, one of the country's main buyers.
However, Seoul's government believes there will only be limited impact from the move.
For details let's turn to our Bae Eun-ji.
South Korea has said that Indonesia's recent decision to ban coal exports will have a "limited impact" on the country.
The Trade Ministry held an emergency task force meeting on Monday, and said the latest move will delay part of a coal shipment coming in from Indonesia,... but it will not have a serious impact, as more than half the planned amount for this month has already been either loaded onto ships or is already on its way to Korea.
It also said that the country has enough coal in its inventory as well as imports from elsewhere.
In 2021, Indonesia supplied around 20-percent of South Korea's coal imports.
Almost half of the country's coal imports were from Australia, while Russia and the U.S. each took up about 10-percent of the imports each.
But despite the limited impact, the ministry added that it will closely monitor the situation.
"We do think that thorough measures are needed, as this measure from Indonesia has been announced in January, when there is high demand for energy."
Last Friday,... Indonesia said it would ban coal exports for the month of January.
This was due to concerns over low supplies for domestic power plants.
Indonesia is the world's biggest exporter of thermal coal.
It exported around 400 million tonnes in 2020.
Analysts forecast that the month-long ban on coal exports is likely to raise global coal prices in the coming weeks.
Back in October 2019, global nickel prices spiked after Indonesia, which accounts for a quarter of the global nickel supply, halted exports.
