Bullmastiff, as the name implies, is a dog breed developed around 1860 in England by crossing two dog breeds: Mastiffs and Bulldogs. Today, it is considered to be among the best guard dogs in the canine world. But, in the past bullmastiffs had a different role they were bred for.

The breeders that developed Bullmastiffs knew what they were doing. They wanted to create a dog breed that would be quicker and more aggressive than a Mastiff, but less ferocious than a Bulldog. Remember that Bulldogs of 19th and the beginning of 20th century weren't the same docile bulldogs we know today.
But why did they need a dog of these traits?
Well, in the mid-19th century, poaching was a hanging offense and English gamekeepers had a dangerous job of catching armed poachers. Eventually, they realized how to make their job much easier! They bred a large, quiet, but fearless dog that was fast enough to track down the poachers, and strong enough to hold them on the ground. That's how the breed got nicknamed as the Gamekeeper's Night-Dog.
But, when poaching declined, the need for Bullmastiffs to track poachers declined too, and they gained a new role: the one of a guardian dog.
1:31 - Physical appearance
The Bullmastiff has a broad, wrinkled head and a short, black muzzle. His ears are V-shaped and his tail is set high on the rear. Bullmastiffs are large dogs of a powerful body, but they are not as big as their breed parent Mastiff. So, if you want a bullmastiff, make sure he has enough space because this dog can easily reach a height of 27 inches.
A bullmastiff's hair is short, dense and easy to maintain. Their fur can be fawn, red, brown or brindle. Also, they are not heavy shedders, which means that it will be quite easy to keep their coats clean and shiny.

Don't let their poacher-tracking past fool you. The Bullmastiffs are incredibly intelligent and make wonderful family dogs. They are loyal, calm, and quite easygoing when properly trained and socialized. So, make sure you start training your Bullmastiff as early as possible if you want to have a sweet dog that won’t be too suspicious towards new people.
However, at times his protective genes can make him aggressive towards strangers. A bullmastiff will do everything to protect his family.

These dogs are quite independent, so training a bullmastiff will require a firm, fair and consistent approach. Only this way will you be able to have a dog that will see you as the master of the house.

Bullmastiffs are low-energy dogs that adapt well to apartment living. A bullmastiff won't require a lot of exercises, in fact, excessive workouts, especially during hot days, should be avoided. Their short muzzle makes them more prone to heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If your bullmastiff stays outdoors, make sure to provide him with shade and fresh water.
