Demonstrative Pronoun and Adjectives
Demonstratives are used to point out and specify something.
This,those,that,these and such are demonstratives.
These are used as Demonstrative Pronouns when they replace Noun or Pronoun and do not qualify Noun. These are used as Demonstrative Adjective when they qualify Noun and Noun is used right after them .
This boy.(Here “this” is used to point out)
This book is very interesting. (Here “This” has been used to point out the “book”and Noun has been used right after “This” so it is called“Demonstrative Adjective” or Determiners. ) Demonstratives are used to identify or point out a particular item and items that may include humans ,things,places and animals in reference to speaker.
This” and “These” are used for things and people nearby or current.
“That” and “Those” are used for a person or thing that are far away.
These are used as Demonstrative Adjectives when they modify Nouns or Pronouns.
I have a book.
This is a very interesting book. (Here "This” has been used instead of a Noun and there is no Noun right after “This” so it is a Demonstrative Pronoun.)
This book is very interesting. (Here “This” has been used to point out the “book”and Noun has been used right after “This” so it is called “Demonstrative Adjective” or Determiners. )
Generally Verb is used after Demonstratives Pronouns.
Examples:
This is a red pen
This is a red book
This is your place.
This is very good thing
Generally “Noun” is used after Demonstrative Adjective.
This book is mine.
These pens are beautiful.
“Such” is also used to point out.
I hate such things.
He loves such obedient students.(:Here “Such” has been used to point out the Noun “students” so it is a “Demonstrative Adjective”.)
These boys must be punished. (Here “boys” Noun has been used right after “these”. so it is a “Demonstrative Adjective” )
This girl must be taught. (Here “girl” Noun has been used right after “this”. so it is a “Demonstrative Adjective” )
Those girls must be taught. (Those comes here with plural Noun and to refer the girls who are far away and Noun “girls” has been used right after “those” so it is Demonstrative Adjective.)
Special Pairs of Demonstrative Adjectives are:
The former ,The latter (They are Demonstrative adjective when Noun is used right after them. )
The former part of the movie is boring.
The latter part of the movie is interesting. (The Latter” is Demonstrative Adjective because it has been used to point out Noun“Part” . )
Examples:
This apple is sweet. (Here “this” is an demonstrative adjective
This is a sweet apple. (Here “This is a pronoun)
