I’m originally from former Yugoslavia where I graduated with an Architectural degree. I’m afraid like probably many other immigrants after the war started in my country in 91’, we decided to leave and were looking for different options, and that’s how we ended up here.

My name is Danica Djurkovic, and I wear two hats. My day to day job is I’m director of the Facilities Planning and Development with the city of Vancouver.
My second hat is I’m President of the Architecture Institute of British Columbia. I wasn’t able to open my own practice when I first came, but I was certainly able to find work and fit right into the architectural offices here.
As an architect we almost have a trade of sort so throughout the world it’s very similar practice of architecture which helped me a great deal in getting started here.
I went to the public sector just to try out, at the time I was working for the Parks Boards. It was during the Olympics in Vancouver so it was my second Olympics which was very exciting.
We have over 640 buildings, 12 billion square feet, so anything from long term planning as well as development. We just recently completed the Vancouver Art Gallery north plaza and are looking forward to new community centres being redeveloped and many new projects we are working on.
I found Canadians were very, are very welcoming to new immigrants. I would say I feel very strong Canada is great country for new immigrants, and I am personally convinced it is one of the best systems that the county has in place.
