Chief Makhanda was a prominent Xhosa warrior and spiritual leader who united and led the Xhosa forces in the Battle of Grahamstown in 1819. His resistance against British colonisation represents the struggle for the preservation of indigenous culture. Makhanda's name has been immortalised in various ways, including the renaming of Grahamstown to Makhanda in 2018, in honour of his courageous role in the history of South Africa.
