This is part 1 of my capture of me and a friend playing through New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the Wii. This was recorded directly from my Wii (not the Wii U). I'm player one (Mario) and Peter is player two (Luigi).
Here's a game that I've wanted to post for quite a while. This is the last Super Mario Bros. game that I needed to post in order to complete my 2D Mario uploads (sadly, I can't record the DS and 3DS Mario games).
I first played New Super Mario Bros. Wii at E3 2009. As I said in my Conduit playthrough, I attended that year's expo, which meant that I visited Nintendo's huge booth. Among other games, I managed to play the new four-player Super Mario Bros. title, which had just been announced. Considering that Super Mario Bros. had not been seen on home consoles since 1991, this was quite exciting.
Luckily, the line wasn't very long for this game, so I got to play a few levels with three random people. While I was playing I kept hearing Mario's voice somewhere behind me, and it wasn't originating from a TV screen. Instead, it turned out Charles Martinet was walking around doing Mario voices on the showroom floor. That was interesting to say the least.
I later purchased New Super Mario Bros. Wii on its release date and played through the entire game with my friend Peter. We were blown away and ultimately completed at least three save files (as you can see here). We couldn't get enough of the game. It reminded me of exactly why the Super Mario Bros. games were so special, which was something I had sort of forgotten.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is amazing. It managed to recapture the magic of the old Super Mario Bros. games and even surpass some of them as well. I found the power-ups and level designs to be better than Super Mario World. And of course, the new simultaneous multiplayer couldn't be matched. This was the first time that a Super Mario Bros. had included simultaneous co-op, which is my favorite type of game.
In some ways, this title reminds of multiplayer games like Contra because of how each person can use a different power-up to get through a level (for instance, ice and fire flowers, compared to something like spreadshot and machine gun). Also, the fact that you can literally carry another person to the goal (or just let them bubble) felt like an evolution of old games such as Double Dragon II and III where I would have to figuratively carry my friends (or brother) through certain difficult stages.
This could be my second favorite Mario game behind Super Mario Bros. 3, but it's hard to say if New Super Mario Bros. Wii is better than New Super Mario Bros. U. New Super Mario Bros. U might be better. My only complaints about this game are the lackluster music and the recycled content (it's basically the same Mushroom Kingdom we've seen before in Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros.). But it does have the best final boss fight of all the Super Mario Bros. games.
Beating this game with Peter once again is sure giving me a nostalgia trip about 2009. Enjoy the footage.
In this first part we started a new save file and completed World 1.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the Wii's component cables at 60 frames per second.
We're using Wii Remotes.
