This week, students in the Officer II program spent their last class day conducting reality-based scenarios. The students had to rotate through a variety of stations each with a different scenario. There were two tactical (one with a PIO component), two conflict resolution and one oral board station. Each station challenged the student’s ability to not only demonstrate knowledge, but more critically, skill.
As future shift leaders, these students must be able to transition quickly between tactical and personnel challenges. The quick pace of the scenarios, that involved moving from one to the other, was by design to simulate the tension that comes with being a Captain in our organization.
By investing in high relevancy, high quality training and education, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department helps prepare this cohort of existing Lieutenants and ensures more effective leadership in the firehouse and on the emergency incident scene.
The below video highlights one of the tactical stations. This scenario involved a dispatch for a reported medical emergency involving an unconscious person. Of course, there was a wrinkle and soon the students realized this was no ordinary medical emergency.
