Great writing can take many shapes. It can excel in working the tropes of a particular genre, but it can also subvert these very tropes to achieve something unique and original. Great writing can be complex, poetic, and Shakespearean. But it can also be minimalistic, succinct, something out of Hemingway. Different approaches are called for different goals.
