Transcript: For the first time since 2010, taxicab fares in Durham will be going up. Taxi operations within the city are regulated by our Transportation Department and fares are set by the City Council. Despite increased gas prices, insurance costs, and competition from services such as Uber and Lyft, the rate of 25 cents per eighth of a mile has not been adjusted since 2010. In response to those market pressures, the City Council has approved an increase for per mile and wait time charges. The initial fare – or drop charge – will remain at $3.60 and then it will be 30 cents for each eighth of a mile. That rate will increase by five cents in July of 2023 and then again in 2025 and 2027. For each minute of waiting time, the fare will increase from 25 cents to 35 cents.
