General starts jail term for ordering assassination
Chilean Brigadier General Pedro Espinoza on Tuesday (20/6) turned
himself in to authorities in Santiago and began serving a six-year
prison sentence for ordering the 1976 assassination of former
Chilean foreign minister Orlando Letelier. His surrender came
after a week-long standoff between the military and civilian
authorities. Espinoza was the longest-serving member of the
military after army commander General Augusto Pinochet. He was the
first Chilean military officer to be jailed for crimes committed
during Pinochet's 16-year dictatorship. Espinoza was the chief of
operations of Pinochet's secret police. Letelier, a prominent
dissident, was killed by a car bomb in the United States. American
investigators traced the attack to the Chilean secret police.
Espinoza was discharged from the military late on Monday and
complained that the armed forces had abandoned him. He and his
boss in the secret police were sentenced by a civilian court after
democracy was restored in Chile in 1990.
