Perennial basil is the same basil that we are all too familiar with, namely the annual sweet basil. It is part of the same mint family, however, it has very different growing habits. Firstly, and most importantly, it is a perennial, meaning that you won't need to plant this basil every year. Secondly, it is more of a shrub than a garden herb like sweet basil.

Perennial basil has a much stronger and earthier taste compared to its sweet counterpart and its smell is incredibly strong. You don't even need to brush up against this plant to know it is there - the aroma just floats through the garden and the hotter the day the stronger the smell.

For me personally, the two biggest benefits of growing perennial basil at home is that it brings in large amounts of bees. Bees absolutely love its flowers which keep blooming throughout the year. Secondly, it has incredible pest deterring abilities. Grow perennial basil in pots and you can very easily move it to where you need some pest protection.

In addition to its amazing properties in the vegetable garden, perennial basil is a reliable culinary herb that is best used fresh in Thai and Italian dishes. Perennial basil is amazing on pizza! It also makes a wonderful tea that for me has proven to have anti anxiety and calming effects.
