A year ago this week, The Wildlife Trusts launched a national vision to put nature into recovery across at least 30% of land and sea by 2030 and started an appeal to raise £30 million to begin the work.
And today we are delighted to announced that the extraordinary community campaigners in Guildford have raised over a million pounds towards that goal and purchased 37.5 acres of rare chalk grassland on the North Downs in Guildford, Surrey.
The fields, with spectacular views across the county, are home to nesting skylarks, chalk hill blue butterflies, bumblebees, wild thyme and orchids. Surrey Wildlife Trust is now thrilled to begin the conservation of this rare habitat to support a rich array of wildlife that will now be able to move and thrive in a much larger and connected green corridor
Working alongside Holy Trinity Pewley Down School, the Save Pewley Down Fields campaign group, Rosamund Community Gardens and Julia Stephenson (lead donor), Surrey Wildlife Trust will create a new nature reserve at Pewley Down Fields to preserve the land in perpetuity for wildlife and for future generations to enjoy.
