In an experiment which is ultimately aimed at producing hydrogen for fuel, German scientists used a huge array of xenon arc lights and focused the lights on a tiny area, producing extreme heat. Ultimately what they say they want to do is concentrate the sun in the same way, producing enough heat to split water into oxygen and hydrogen.
They claim that it is to fight global warming, but that is a lie. Water vapor is well known as the primary greenhouse gas in our atmosphere, and water vapor is what is produced by burning hydrogen.
