Such a wonderful funky/soul bassline from Jerry Jemmott! It’s a bassline in the style of James Jamerson. A lot of syncopated notes; sixteenth notes and mostly played staccato (short) or muted.
I really love the maingrooves he plays in the Verse and in the Chorus. The maingroove in the Verse are two bars (for instance bar 6 and 7). He almost always plays the first bar of the maingroove the same and he varies in the second bar of the main groove. Listen for instance at bars 5, 7 and 9.
The main groove in the Chorus stays the same (for instance bars 10 and 11), but he often makes a little variation when he plays towards the accents of the Eb chord (bar 13). Listen for instance at bar 12.
In the Interlude and Chorus 4 Jerry plays a lot of sixteenth notes, which is a challenge to play them ‘tight’ because the drums are somewhat messy (at least in my opinion) in the end of the song.
