EJ...!!!
I was practicing Eric's magnificent solo on this track but I wanted to keep playing after the solo ended so I did :)
Ah via musicom is definitely one of the best guitar albums ever featuring one stellar guitar performance after another on the eleven stylistically diverse yet cohesive tracks. While the Tones album was a harbinger of things to come and Venus isle an afterburner, the Musicom album is arguably Eric's best work: great songs, fantastic tone, super fluid melodic solos (those lightning pentatonic runs...man !!) and as a whole highly original.
There are only a chosen few in the arena of rock guitarists who have the ability to make their speed licks sound every inch as thick and fat as their melodies, where every note in each fast run is in your face and just pops out of your speaker ! Yngwie and Dann Huff come to mind and I'll add Eric to that list but that's about it....yep, it's a small circle :)
After Venus isle Johnson kinda lost his way and - I'm sorry to say - became the 'overthinking' man's guitarist. Seems like he's scrutinizing everything to death when it comes to his playing and in the process he's losing that spontaneity which was still abundant on Musicom. I'm afraid he'll never recover. A shame really...
Played on my fabulous Lincoln Brewster Fender Stratocaster.
Eric Johnson - best albums (in order of personal preference) :
1. Ah via musicom
2. Venus isle
3. Tones
