I love these wiring hacks because they cost almost nothing and add so much versatility to your guitar or bass. In this video I’ll show you how to wire a humbucker so you can switch between standard humbucker series wiring, or isolate just the north coil, or just the south coil. I’m dan, this is guns and guitars, let’s get started.
Okay for this mod you’ll need a humbucker with 4 conductor wiring, a soldering iron and basic soldering skills, as well as a 3 position spdt on/off/on switch, although I actually use a dpdt switch because they are cheaper and easier to find, I just don’t use the second pole.
Also note that even though we are using an on/off/on switch, the way we are going to wire it the middle position won’t be off, it will be the standard humbucker wiring with both coils in series. In the up position it will short out the south coil, making it so only the north coil passes thru, and likewise, in the down position, it’ll short out the north coil, leaving us with just the south coil passing thru.
Before we get started, you’ll need to know your pickup wires color codes. You can look that up online if your pickup is made by a known manufacturer. But If you have a generic brand pickup, or you just can’t find the color codes for your pickups online anywhere, I have a simple video that shows you how to figure them out yourself using a multimeter, so check that out.
Okay first if you’re using a dpdt switch instead of a spdt switch, go ahead and mentally mark out your second pole terminals, you won’t need them.
Then, connect the start wire of the north coil to the top terminal, along with your output hot connection to your pickup selector or volume pot.
Next, connect the finish wires of both your north and south coils to the center terminal.
Lastly, connect the start of your south coil to the bottom terminal along with your ground connection.
That’s it, now here is a preview of how it sounds with a bass double j humbucker in the bridge position. I’m going to show you a demo real quick from my jaguar bass build video, but I’m rearranging the clips so you can hear back to back the difference in tone between the humbucker series, north only, and south only coils. Check it out.
Now in addition to bass, using this mod on Guitar opens up a lot of possibility’s as well, instead of a traditional coil split, this wiring is not only more simple, but offers way more to tonal options, as well as being able to select which coil could give you hum canceling properties when used with your other pickups.
I hope you found this wiring hack helpful.
