I wanted this one as it is a highly rated amateur radio sweep tube linear amplifier. Really good reviews on places like Eham. I wanted to see the difference between this highly rated amp and a despised similar amp like the Palomar 300A. I got the manual/schematics online, and not much difference there. Grounded Grid tubes, about the same amount of bias used, this does have a Pi tuned input (variable tune and load for the input swr adjustment) and I like the Voltage and Plate metering, but as with Ham amps, it did not originally have 10 or 11 meters in it. 15-80 meters only. It does not have an automatic keying circuit. You will need a foot switch to key the amp. No preamp, but internal preamps in amps are pretty much useless to me anyway. Last, no internal driver. Needs a good 50-100 watts drive. Since the basic circuitry is so close, I personally would chose the Palomar 300A over this because of the internal driver and auto keying circuit in the 300A. However, if you have a high output radio and want a little more kick, this may be the ticket, but many don't know that on the Low side, the Palomar 300A bypassed the driver tubes and would be a straight 4 tube, all outputs, like this LA-1000 here. Both the 6lq6 (6mh6) tubes in this amp and the 6lf6 (8950) tubes used in the Palomars are expensive though. No way around that.
