Oath In Court Room by Putting Hand On Holy Book–আদালতে গীতায় হাত দিয়ে শপথ গ্রহন –সত্যি নাকি রূপকথা ?
During Mughal Period, the witness was bound to take an oath by putting a hand on his religious book – Hindu on Geeta or Holy water of Ganges, Muslims on Quran, and Christians on Bible. As at that relevant time, the people were extremely loyal towards God and their religions. So, they will only speak the truth while taking an oath of their religious book. But, this custom was struck down by the British Government firstly in 1840 and then in 1873 by the introduction of the uniform system. Notwithstanding, the Oath Act 1873, Bombay High Court continued this custom even after the India became free from British Rule. Later the entire system of taking oath by putting hand on religious book abolished with the passing of Indian Oath Act, 1969.
