Emergency preparedness is a key role for public health professionals. Using the H1N1 pandemic as an example, the activities and challenges of public health professionals (including community health nurses) and their partners are illustrated throughout the stages of emergency planning: prevention and mitigation, preparedness, actual response and recovery.
