When the suggested retail price on the car you’re driving is $236,000 you’re going to have some expectations. If it’s the Aston Martin DBX 707, rest easy. Those will be met. But let’s just get something out of the way first. This is a prototype, says so right on the window, so it’s not production perfect just yet.
What is perfect on it for the time being is the thumping AMG-sourced M177 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Former Aston head Tobias Moers used to run things at AMG so it’s not hard to understand how Mercedes unclenched their fists on this one.
This isn’t necessarily a different engine that’s on the “regular” DBX, but it’s been, can I say zhuzzed a bit with a new induction system, new turbos and new calibration bringing the power output to 697 horses.
It’s also making 644 lb-ft of torque at an enticingly low 2,600 and can get you in a lot of trouble with Jonny Law in about 3.3 seconds depending on where you engage launch control.
In order to accommodate those extra ponies under the hood Aston Martin’s had to make some adjustments to the body. Firstly, the grille is 27% more open than it was before. Needs all that fresh air to keep things cool. That’s a big maw. They’ve also reworked the aero in the rear with a new carbon-fiber diffuser that does look a bit clunky to me, but meh. Just look at the profile of this thing! It might be perfect. Except those panel and trim gaps but remember this is a prototype.
Does it drive like an SUV? Hell no. Aston’s stiffened the front suspension but softened the rear and it actually makes for a comfortable ride for something that also drives like a punch in the kidneys. Can I add that it’s on 23-inch wheels with P Zeros on it? Still surprisingly not uncomfortably harsh.
The DBX gets massive rotors the size of long-play records, if you remember what those are, (16.5-inch front/15.4-inch rears). I like how they feel. They engage right at the top of the pedal without feeling overly grabby.
They’ve increased the track on the rear tires ever so slightly making this juiced DBX turn better, more stability with that increased force and the Active Roll Control has gone next level. There is virtually no roll in this baby.
Honestly, this is balanced plus. I’ve driven a Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk around a track and that scared me. It felt so top heavy. This one, nope. It’ like it’s not even an SUV.
Speaking of, other SUV’s that get similar sauce in the recipe include the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, BMW X6 M and that Cherokee Trackhawk, though it’s a bargain when compared with those others mentioned.
Speaking of bargains, you’re fuel economy here isn’t one. (15 city/20 hwy). And I’m betting those numbers are when you’re driving super sedately through the drop off line at school.
The interior, oh, the interior is a bit of a mixed bag for me. Firstly, let’s take a moment for the gorgeous leather, the Bridge of Wier sumptuousness that is this interior. It covers almost every surface and it’s beautiful. Aston Martin will also make this in virtually any color you desire. When it comes to how comfortable the seats are, they do a surprisingly good job of serving two masters, comfort and support.
One major thing to note that doesn’t blow my hair back is this. This is the previous generation Mercedes infotainment system and it’s a dinosaur by today’s touchscreen standards. You can only operate it using this dial. It took me over a minute of poking the heck out of this screen to remember that.
It’s a dated system that’s layered and clumsy and, oh, just if you’re spending almost $300,000 for a car you should expect something on the cutting edge. This isn’t.
And it does get Apple CarPlay connectivity but not Android Auto and they’re not wireless, so it’s a bit tough to find out where to put this. Also, and this doesn’t bother me so much as it’s something to get used to, the transmission shift buttons feel backward because they make these in England and normally the driver is over there.
Other standard stuff includes a power liftgate, heated front and rear seats, and wireless charging.
You can upgrade to ventilated front and rear seats, special sexy paint colors and trims to match, those larger wheels, like I’ve got here, and brake calipers in an color you’d like.
If the DBX 707 is too rich for your blood then maybe spring for the lesser-powered (542 horsepower) lesser-priced DBX that starts closer to $186,000. But if you’ve got some extra cash in that change jar and you’re in the mood to scorch a little tarmac with your family hauler, guys, the Aston Martin DBX 707 might be it.
