The Canary Islands are not the only location within Spain to produce geologically recent volcanic eruptions. As, off the eastern coast of the country are a series of 20 islands in close proximity to one another that formed in shallow submarine and explosive volcanic eruptions. Known as the Columbretes Islands, these islands formed during a rift zone related eruptive sequence between 1.1 million and 200,000 years ago.
