Today is my 30th birthday! No better time to release this cover
Birthday was recorded on September 18th, 1968 for the White Album. The backing track was recorded live- consisting of drums, bass and two electric guitars. Later overdubs recorded that day included piano, percussion and vocals
Originally it was believed that George played bass and Paul played lead guitar. But the 2018 White Album box set lists Paul on bass and George on lead guitar. I am of the opinion that the box set is correct, and that Paul played Fender Jazz Bass and George played Les Paul lead guitar, while John played the lower guitar riff on his Epiphone Casino
There are two reasons why I believe Paul played bass
1. The 2018 box set claims that the original tape box has this lineup
2. the outtake from the box set has bass panned center and the two guitars panned left-right stereo. Paul is heard shouting and counting off the song dead center with the bass
Assuming George played his Gibson Les Paul Standard, it sounds he was plugged into their Vox Conqueror amplifier on distortion mode. It has the same tone as other songs that featured that amp- Hey Bulldog, Lady Madonna, Savoy Truffle, Me and My Monkey, etc.
John most likely used his Epiphone Casino, playing the lower octaves. His tone is somewhat clean compared to George's. He probably plugged into one of the Fender amps that they were using at the time- a Showman, Deluxe or Bassman
I'm playing my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard into a 1965 Fender Bassman amp. The distortion is coming from my Aclam Doctor Robert pedal, which specifically emulates the Vox Conqueror/UL730 amp tones. The boost section of the pedal 'Mach Schau' is on, which produces more drive
For John's part I'm using my 2021 Epiphone Casino USA into the 1965 Fender Bassman. I'm also using my Analogman King of Tone pedal on boost mode, to add just a slight amount of crunch
At 2:18 John accidentally plays D D F Ab instead of D D Gb A
You'll also notice I'm playing drums in the breakdown section. This was from my drum cover of Birthday- [ Ссылка ]
