The Oceans: The Victims and the Saviours | Steven Bartell, Martin Puchner, Merlin Sheldrake and Sejal Mehta in conversation with Sanjoy Roy, introduced by Margaret MacLeod
Though the ocean covers more than two-thirds of our planet, produces roughly half of the oxygen we breathe, and has sequestered over 40% of the carbon dioxide emitted since the dawn of the industrial revolution, its contributions to ameliorating the global climate crisis is regularly overlooked; the full text of the Paris Climate Accord includes the word ‘ocean’ exactly once. We tend to think of the warming, acidifying, rising ocean as a victim of climate change when in fact it’s poised to be a hero, with natural systems that help undo the damage human activity has caused.

Martin Puchner, a Professor of English at Harvard University, is a prize-winning author, whose books range from philosophy to the arts, including the best-selling The Written World and his memoir The Language of Thieves. His new book Culture: The Story of Us will be published in early 2023.
Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and author of Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures, a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, and winner of the Royal Society Book Prize and the Wainwright Prize. Sheldrake is a research associate of the Vrije University Amsterdam, and works with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks and the Fungi Foundation.
Sejal Mehta has navigated the publishing industry for over 20 years. She has worked in the core teams of publications, including Femina, Lonely Planet, National Geographic Traveller, and Nature inFocus. Apart from writing for national and international publications, she has contributed to children's books and two anthologies. Her science communication work with Marine Life of Mumbai, an initiative documenting wildlife around Mumbai's coasts, led to a book on coastal creatures titled Superpowers On The Shore, published by Penguin Random House. She is currently handling science communication and outreach at The Habitats Trust.
Sanjoy K. Roy, an entrepreneur of the arts, is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 festivals in 42 cities and 17 countries, including the world’s largest literary gathering — the Jaipur Literature Festival and international editions of JLF. He is a founder-trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust, working to provide support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi where over 55,000 children have benefited from education, training and residential services. Roy is the Co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and former President of Event and Entertainment Management Association. Roy has lectured at and works in collaboration with leading universities across the world.
Margaret MacLeod is the First Secretary for the Public Diplomacy section at U. Embassy India. She coordinates public engagement with established opinion leaders focusing, in particular, on U.S. Mission to India’s goals related to the Indo-Pacific Strategy. Her domestic assignments include International Security and Non-proliferation, International Organizations.
