Spoiler alert: They’re probably not. It’s more likely they’re misunderstood.
You might look at one of your health reports and think “that’s not right.” Dog allergy, for example. You may know you do NOT have a dog allergy, yet your health report says you DO.
How is this possible?
It’s not because your DNA was read or interpreted incorrectly…
There’s a little thing called “gene expression,” which is essentially a gene’s way of being “turned on” or “turned off.” You can have all the right genetic combinations for a particular trait, yet not see or experience that trait.
All DNA tests for health really do is make a prediction based on the combinations you have.
Imagine a lamp in a room. A room is statistically more likely to be lit if there is a lamp in it. A room is statistically less likely to be lit if there isn’t a lamp in it.
All DNA tests for health do is see whether there’s a lamp in the room. They can’t see whether that lamp is turned on.
