Storing forces of the Universe in a bunch of stones is sloppy it turns out. They’re just laying about waiting for someone to find them and use that power any way they see fit. What you really need is the anthropomorphic manifestation of the seven elements of consciousness, Dream, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction, and Destiny. Of course having a being in charge of it carries its own challenges. Driven by the things they are an aspect for, they can get up to their own shenanigans without someone having to make a cool gauntlet. When sibling rivalry ends up locking Dream up for decades, letting the dreams and nightmares of the Dream Lands start to wander free. Compilations with that and dealing with the increasingly intense inter-sibling squabbling knocks the Endless into enough conflict to fill 70+ issues of the groundbreaking comic The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. As the long awaited live action adaptation has finally hit Netflix it might be worth it to go through the Endless that are at the center of these stories and find out what it means to be an aspect? What is an Endless and what kind of powers do they possess? They’re not gods or demons or anything that would fit so crudely into fixed mythologies. There are some trains of thought that they’re not even beings at all but just the aspect manifesting its will in the form of illusions.
