Today I’m performing my song Send Me A Butterfly in loving memory of Lizzette Tilley.
I wrote this song in 2006 after my dear friend Tira was given 3 months to live by her doctors...due to Hodgkins Lymphoma.
When I went to visit her in the hospital, I asked her to send me a butterfly when she got to the other side so I’d know that Heaven was real. She loved dark humor, so needless to say, we both shared a desperate laugh after I said that to her.
She died a month later and I played an older version of Send Me A Butterfly at her funeral on a beautiful grand piano. But the lyrics were different then.
A couple years later, my manager at the time, Mike Cleary, sent the song to NSAI in Nashville to be critiqued by hit a songwriter.
It was Sandy Ramos who was picked randomly to critique my song... but she didn’t just critique it!
She reached out to my manager and offered to help me make the lyrics better. I’m so glad I took her up on the offer.... because this song wouldn’t be what it is today without her.
The original lyrics to the chorus were:
Send me a butterfly
Or any other kind of sign
If you could just eclipse the sun while I’m the only one looking above
Let me hear our favorite song
The next time I turn the radio on
If you’re up there on the other side
Send me a butterfly
The first thing she said was that NO ONE was ever going to get an eclipsed sun on demand like that. Haha.
And she was right!
So we started writing new lyrics.
She offered the line “Send me a butterfly, in the middle of a cold December night”. And I replied with, “Isn’t that impossible too? Aren’t butterflies seasonal?” lol
At that moment, as we were sitting outside on her back porch, a blue butterfly 🦋 landed on the table. It was the color of my dad’s eyes (who had just recently commited suicide).
So I sang the line “Send me a a butterfly, and let it be the color of your eyes”.
We knew instantly that was the right lyric. Because there aren’t that but a few different eye colors, and there are hundreds of different butterfly colors.
Suddenly the chances of someone getting their own miracle moment with our song were much greater!
The way the lyrics were written before was an impossible outcome. An eclipsed sun on demand!? Haha! Never gonna happen! But a brown, blue, or green butterfly - now thats totally doable! 🙏🏻
I believe God is very real and I firmly believe Tira & my father are in Heaven with Lizzette, probably jamming out to a live Prince or Elvis concert with an angel super band.
I hope this song brings you healing like it has for myself and countless others.
With peace & love,
Nolan Neal
