Before ‘Atomic Blonde’ director David Leitch changed the game for action movies with his breakout hit ‘John Wick,’ he started a stunt performer and fight choreographer. Training in the art of fight choreography gave him the skills necessary to direct the chaotic action of ‘John Wick.’ Fight choreography is a time-honored Hollywood tradition, but its roots go all the way back to Shakespeare and beyond. The first films to hire a fight coordinator were early swashbucklers, but the real innovations came out of Asia with the birth of the martial arts movie.
There’s nothing quite like the intensity of a great Charlize Theron fight, but like all action stars she owes a debt to early Chinese and Hong Kong cinema. From the early wuxia martial arts movies to the birth of the kung fu flick, Hong Kong has been a breeding ground for new ideas in the art of fight choreography. Stars like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee inspired a new generation of filmmakers and fans, and with fight choreography from legends like Yuen Woo-Ping, the action looks just as incredible as Atomic Blondie.
In America, the beefy action stars of the ‘80s gave way to slimmer martial artists and asian-inspired acrobatics, but the real revelation came in 1999 when we entered ‘The Matrix.’ Combining wuxia-inspired wirework with John Woo’s signature gun fu, ‘The Matrix’ inspired a thousand imitations and changed the way we think about fight scenes. Atomic Blondie is the latest entry in a new wave of action movies that rely on expert fight choreography and badass actors, not quick cuts and stunt performers. The Atomic Blondie movie is latest in a line of films that are bringing back the classic pillars of fight choreography: Dance, acting, action, all rolled into one.
