Probably the hardest shot I ever made.
20 motion capture takes, 4 static models, and countless scrapped motion capture takes.
The point I wanted to get across with this video is that things look like crap when you work on them. I get asked a lot about how did I get so good with animation, so I decided to show you firsthand that my videos are a mess behind the scenes too. In this case it’s almost intentionally messy, because I wanted to save as much time as I could when making this.
I think many people start making a video and give up quickly when they see that stuff doesn’t look as good. And what they fail to realize is that the only thing that matters is what the camera sees.
If you can’t do a good walking animation – hide the legs of the character off frame. If you can’t model a character getting ripped in half with a minigun – hide him off screen and then bend the model to make it look like he got cut in half.
Not being able to do something in film/animation, and figuring a way around it is part of the fun.
It’s called being creative by necessity. And a lot of the times you get the best result when you have to use your imagination.
One of the best horror movies ‘The Thing’ by John Carpenter, turned out to be a cult classic only because the budget was not enough for what John Carpenter wanted to achieve with special effects.
He had to come up with clever camera angles, shadows, and other cinema tricks to get the movie finished. And as it turned out - the fact that you can’t see all those monsters most of the time, only added to the horror effect.
If you’re a content creator, I hope this gave you some confidence boost.
