Written by Don Gant and Joe Melson.
From the album, “Rum Baby Run”.
The group’s third and final album reached #131 on the US album chart. It was tagged after the single of the same name, which made it to #12 on the Hot-100 and then to # in the UK in 1971, as the title found a following with northern soul fans.
It was the last US Top-40 entry for the Newbeats. In spite of a very distinctive sound, the group’s chart run lasted for only two years but they did return to the Hot-100 with “Groovin (Out On Life)” in 1969. Another reminder of how quickly tastes changed in the 60s.
Of the group, Dean and Mark Mathis are still with us but Larry Henley passed in 2014.
