Pre-succession. This is not a term that we see often. Most #familybusinesses really only start thinking succession when the time for a transition is upon them. When we think succession planning, we think a transition that is looming and needs immediate attention.
I'd argue this is far too late.
The process of preparing a family, a business, and each individual in the family for an eventual succession begins years in advance.
Why? Because there are important, impactful decisions that need to be made that should-- or cannot-- be rushed.
So why is succession planning the first thing to get kicked down the road?
The real questions being, what is it that you most fear when thinking about eventual succession?
