In 1976, Russia Pushed To Get a Fallen F-14 Tomcat or The US Navy.
On September 14, 1976, an F-14 Tomcat fell off from the deck of the aircraft carrier in Scapa Flow, and a Soviet missile cruiser sailing nearby found out about this. Soon, the Soviet Union prepared a fishing fleet doing fishing tasks in the Scapa Flow, where the F-14 was lost, to retrieve it. Their actual aim was not the F-14, though; it was the Aim-54 Phoenix missile. But their struggle failed. Then the US Navy sent its secret vessel on a search and recovery mission once the Soviets had left. It was the NR-1, the smallest nuclear-powered submarine on Earth. She successfully located both the F-14 and the Aim-54 Phoenix.
