According to state-run news agency Anadolu, an Istanbul court sentenced Turkish civil rights campaigner and philanthropist Osman Kavala to life in jail for trying to topple the government.
An anti-government movement erupted in Turkey in 2013 over a proposal to transform a tiny park in the heart of Istanbul into a retail mall during the summer. Kavala was jailed in connection with this.
Anti-government rallies spread throughout Turkey once the protests began. There were a total of eight defendants sentenced to 18 years in jail for their roles in a coup attempt. Architect Mucella Yapici, 71, urban planner Tayfun Kahraman, of Istanbul Municipality, and filmmaker Cigdem Mater were among those in attendance.
The activists were promptly detained by Istanbul's 13th Heavy Penal Court, Anadolu said.
Kavala, his attorneys, and other defendants' lawyers have rejected the charges, claiming prosecutors lack proof. The judgment is anticipated to be appealed as well.
Kavala, 64, is a well-known prisoner in Turkey.
Since that time, he has been charged with a variety of crimes relating to the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul in 2013. the case was carefully followed by human rights organizations, who have accused Turkey of manipulating the legal system to repress dissident views.
For the July 2016 failed coup, at least 250 people were killed and over 110,000 people were jailed, including government workers, teachers, activists, and journalists. Even though Kavala was found not guilty in 2020, fresh accusations were presented against him and he was re-arrested.
A terrible setback to human rights, Amnesty International said Monday's judgment defies all sense.
