Maumool Abdul Gayoom is a Maldivian politician and an Islamic scholar who served as the president of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008. He ventured into politics as the minister of transport and went onto become the President of Maldives. In September 2011, he returned to Maldives politics as the leader of the newly formed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
