Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi exchanged views on China-U.S. relations and issues of common concerns with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington D.C. on Wednesday during a stopover on his way back home from Argentina.
At a press conference after the meeting, Wang said China and the United States should constantly deepen their mutually beneficial cooperation in a wide range of areas. The essence of the China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial and win-win. He hoped that both sides should step up their work to implement the consensus reached in their trade negotiations a couple of days ago.
Wang also called to properly handle differences and problems so as to clear obstacles in the China-U.S. relations. He expected the United States to abide by its commitment to the one-China policy, honor the principles of the three China-US joint communiques and maintain the healthy development of the overall China-U.S. relations and peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits region.
Wang also stressed the two sides should expand their cooperation in regional and international affairs.
For his part, Pompeo said the United States is willing to work together with China to promote the continuous improvement and development of the bilateral relations.
He said the United States remains unchanged in its stance of adhering to one-China policy and the U.S. policy on this issue is consistent. As for the trade issues, the two countries' economic teams have just conducted constructive consultations. He hoped the two sides make further efforts to refine and implement related consensus to benefit both peoples.
Pompeo said the U.S. side speaks highly of Chinese efforts in handling the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and appreciates China’s positive role in promoting talks between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
