Sangeeta Pitamaha Sri Purandaradasaru, a pioneer in setting up the systematic syllabus for learning Carnatic music, belonged to the late 15th century, hailed from Purandara gada in Maharashtra. Another version is that he was born in Kshemapura, near Shivamoga.
Purandaradasa was born in a wealthy family - diamond merchants. His original name was Srinivasa Nayak, and his parents affectionately called him Timmappa or Seenappa Tirumalarayappa.
Timmappa mastered Sanskrit, Kannada, and Music by the age of 16, that is when he got married to Saraswati Bai. After the demise of his father, Timmappa took over the family business and became very successful. He earned Nine crores in a very short period and was referred to by his fellow merchants as Navakoti Narayana.
An interesting incident took place in his life which is an eye-opener for miser Timmappa. He then gave up all his wealth and luxury to the poor and started living a simple life along with his wife Saraswati Bai and five sons.
The episode narrates this incident and as well features one of his compositions Saranu Siddhi Vinayaka in Sourashtra ragam, Misra chapu talam.
