Where were Elvis's parents married? We visit the Town Hall where Vernon and Gladys Presley were married in Verona, Mississippi
Elvis Presley's parents - Vernon and Gladys - were married here in Verona Mississippi. This is our revisit to Verona Town Hall to see if there had been any changes since our visit 2 years ago. Here in June 1933 Vernon Presley married Gladys Smith after gaining a marriage licence in nearby Pontotoc. As Vernon was only 17 at the time, he figured nobody knew him in Pontotoc so he could get away with declaring he was older than he was. Vernon and Gladys came back here to get married, before Vernon built a home in East Tupelo and where ultimately Elvis Presley was born in January 1935.

This is Verona Town Hall where Elvis's parents came in June of 1933 to get married. Vernon at the time was working for Orville Bean the dairy farmer. Gladys was working at the Tupelo Garment Factory over in downtown Tupelo When Vernon and Gladys first met, Vernon lived
next door to the birthplace up there on Old Saltillo Road, and Gladys' family lived on a house here on the corner. Gladys with her family lived on the corner here of Berry and Adams. So obviously well within walking distance of each other they lived. So this is where Gladys lived. After Vernon and Gladys were married they lived with relatives for a short while while Vernon was loaned the money from his employer Orville Bean, and Vernon, with the help of his father Jessie and his brother Vester Presley, built the house that's now the Birthplace over in East Tupelo where Elvis was born on January 8 1935 just about 18 months after Vernon and Gladys were married. As it says there June 1933 Gladys and Vernon came to Verona to get married. They went to Pontotoc to get the marriage license with Vona Mae Presley who was Noah Presley's daughter - so Vernon's cousin - and Marshall Brown who was actually a distant cousin of Gladys. They went to Pontotoc to get the marriage license where Vernon lied about his age, he gave his age as 22 rather than his actual age of 17, that's why they went to Pontotoc because nobody knew nobody would know who he was there so he would get away with lying about his age. So he said he was 22 and Gladys was 19 when in fact Gladys was four years older than him. She was 21 Vernon was 17. So once they got the marriage license they came back here to the Verona Town Hall to get married. So, this is the third time we have come to the Verona Town Hall over the years. That is Vona Mae Brown - Vona Mae Presley and Marshall Brown there
