In 2014, CrossFit hosted its first Level 1 Seminar in Israel. Seminar Staff member Russell Berger took the opportunity to spend an extra week traveling the country, visiting its affiliates and experiencing the culture. In this six-part series, explore the Holy Land with Berger and the local community.

It all started in 2011 when a group of Israeli athletes traveled to Stamford, Connecticut, to attend a Level 1 Seminar at CrossFit Hybrid Athletics. With only one affiliate in Israel at the time, the group was hoping to help CrossFit grow.

“You arm these people with the knowledge to come back … and teach and you hope that they infect other people,” says Rob Orlando, owner of CrossFit Hybrid Athletics.

By Jan. 18, 2014, there are 18 affiliates in Israel. Murry Zbrowski, who was part of the group who traveled to the U.S. in 2011, owns CrossFit Modiin. He says the CrossFit community is growing at a rapid rate in Israel.

“They posted (the Level 1 Seminar) up late Friday, and I think within eight hours or 10 hours it was overbooked,” Zobrowski says. “The whole thing was sold out.”

Once in Jerusalem, Berger revels in the diversity.

“It’s a wild experience,” Berger says of one of the world’s oldest cities. “Just a mash of different cultures and ethnicities. It’s bizarre.”

He adds: “It’s a cool opportunity to get connected with other people through CrossFit.”
