This Heart Month, we’re sharing the story of Dr. Charles Williams, a proud patient and loyal supporter of the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute. After several appointments, Dr. Williams’ life changed forever when he found out he was in need of a heart and liver transplant. Dr. Williams learned that there was an exact match and the complex Domino Liver Transplant would take place. The Domino Liver Transplant is a type of transplant that occurs when a liver needs to be replaced in one person but the liver is still suitable for another patient. Dr. Williams’ surgery was a success and he received a new heart and liver. Post-surgery, he learned that he was able to save a life, as his liver was healthy for a successful transplant to another patient.
Dr. Williams reflected on his experience, saying, “My teams were superb. My heart transplant team, liver transplant team, cardiologists and liver doctors were all very good to me. They kept me well informed. I felt a responsibility over time, that I’m not in this world just for me. I’m in this world to serve, to give and now I’m glad to see that the latest opportunity I have is really with the new program at Ochsner, a very beautiful new program.”
Because of his experience, Dr. Williams created a caregiver support and education fund for heart transplant patients. He said he realized that as he was going through the transplant process, there was a need for more time and resources for caregivers so they can best support the healing of the patient post-transplant.
