UNESCO World Heritage Site
700-900 steps up depending on how you count them (and back down)
1.6km ascent (and back down)
200m elevation change
Watch out for the donkey trains on the steps! And watch out for the mess and flies left behind by the donkeys. This trail smelled like a barn. We were grateful for the breeze and shaded rest stops along the way.
The view at the top? "The Monastery" - 45m high and 50m wide
I found my limits on this hike. It would have been different if I were fresh, but this was following 10 days straight of hiking across Israel and climbing through the wadi the day before. The tops of my knees were completely spent. I pushed myself too far that day in 95F temperature. I got a little dizzy while at the top (after the 1.5 hours and 2L of water to get up there). Two bananas, an ice cream cone, and a fresh 1.5L bottle of water helped me get back down.
Sorry for the heavy breathing all the way through. As a desk jockey I'm just proud of myself for finishing.
Special thanks to John DeLancey from Biblical Israel Ministry & Tours for leading this trip. Find his channel and website here:
