Isolyte-M is a fluid with high potassium content (35 mEq/L), making it useful for treating low potassium levels. However, ensure the patient has good urine output and normal kidney function before using it.The electrolyte balance in Isolyte-M is similar to what the body needs for maintenance. It also corrects acidosis and provides energy. This makes Isolyte-M an ideal fluid for maintaining electrolyte balance, pH levels, energy supply, and hydration.Because Isolyte-M has a low sodium content (40 mEq/L), it should not be used for patients with low sodium levels (hyponatremia) or significant salt and water loss.
Indications:
Ideal for maintenance fluid therapy.Corrects hypokalemia caused by diarrhea, bilious vomiting, prolonged infusion of potassium-free IV fluids, ulcerative colitis, etc.
Contraindications:
Renal failure: Use cautiously or avoid in significant kidney failure due to the risk of high potassium levels.Hyponatremia and water intoxication: Avoid due to low sodium content.Adrenocortical insufficiency: These patients have high potassium levels and should avoid high potassium fluids.Burns: Patients with severe burns may have high potassium due to tissue damage and need fluids with higher sodium content, like Ringer's lactate, instead of Isolyte-M.
