After months of delay a controversial paper that showed how the mutated bird flu virus could potentially transmit between mammals has been published. In the paper University of Wisconsin influenza virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka showed that after just four plausible mutations the H5N1 virus could become easily transmissible between humans. The report was held up for several months while biosecurity experts debated whether the information was safe to release into the public domain. Sources: Washington Post
