William (Billy) Dixon was a buffalo hunter in the Texas Panhandle which was still occupied by Cheyennes, Comanches, and Kiowas. In June of 1874, a trading camp known as Adobe Walls was attacked by a party of about 700 Plains Indians under the leadership of Quanah Parker and Isa-tai. Twenty-eight men and one woman defended themselves from inside the adobe structures for four or five days losing only 4 of their own. This was the Second Battle Of Adobe Walls. [ Ссылка ]
However, on the second day of the attack just after sunrise, the warriors appeared on top of a nearby mesa. Billy Dixon loaded his Sharps buffalo rifle with a .50-90 Sharps cartridge and shot one of the warriors nearly a mile away. His record shot lasted 93 years before it was broken in 1967. [ Ссылка ]
