*WARNING: This video mentions suicide and may be triggering.
Today is the start of National Suicide Prevention Week, an annual week-long campaign designed to inform the public about suicide and the warning signs of suicide.
So let’s get informed and learn some of the telltale signs that someone you care about may be suicidal. Here are 3 of the top warning signs to watch out for:
#1 Someone may be talking very openly about wanting to die.
#2 Someone may be talking about feeling isolated or like they’re a burden to the people around them.
#3 You might start seeing obvious mood swings and changes in someone’s behavior.
#4 There might be an increase in someone’s substance abuse as a way of coping with anxiety or depression.
#5 You might see a sudden or dramatic change in a person’s personal hygiene habits.
So what do you do? If you recognize any of these signs that someone may be suicidal, ask them directly if they’re thinking of killing themselves. Then encourage them to call the 988 Crisis & Suicide Hotline where a trained counselor will be there to help.
