VR Controllers for the Apple Vision Pro
Introduction
Since the launch of the apple vision pro on february the 2nd, people have been concerned about the limitations of XR & VR Apps due to the vision pro only supporting hand tracking & bluetooth controllers. Unlike their competitors such as meta, pico, htc, & More all launching their devices with dedicated controllers. Well its great news for apple vision owners because in today's video we will be discussing a new pair of 3rd party controllers dedicated for the apple vision pro and what it means for the device moving forward. Let's get into it.
Currently apple vision pro supports hand tracking & eye tracking as its main form of input.
You can connect bluetooth devices like the dualsense PS5 controller to stream playstation games but no dedicated controllers from apple.
Well this start up company called surreal interactive says it will sell 6dof tracked vr controllers for the vision pro.
This company was founded by Zhenfei Yang who has 8 years experience with slam computer vision technology & led DJIs entire robot computer vision group, as well as working with alphabet engineers on google glass, google maps and the self driving car projects.
The Look and Pinch feature currently on apple vision pro is amazing but without controller support its hard for a lot of currently beloved XR games & Apps to be bought over to the device.
That's where the Surreal touch enters the market to solve this issue. It uses Twk fisheye tracking cameras & a chipset within the device to give an accurate position tracking.
Similar to what we have seen in the Meta Quest Pro Controllers, however this device uses 2 cameras compared to the quest pros 3 cameras.
This device does however have a similar design with similar action buttons, thumbsticks, index trigger & Grip Trigger.
Surreal interactive says it will offer 10mm positioning accuracy & describes it as unparalleled tracking, Compared to meta & Valves 1mm tracking.
The surreal touch is designed to either be used stand alone on the vision pro or using the startup's upcoming SDK or PC VR visionOS app called Surreal Link, Using open-source ALVR for additions such as pairing the controllers.This SDK is already being tested by open brush contributors.
One noticeable issue with the surreal interactive website is its claims to support 4K 120hz SteamVR graphics when the apple vision pro doesn't support 120hz, this is either a typo or indication of support of other devices.
Their are videos of the surreal touch hardware being used and demonstrated on their youtube channel showing gameplay of beats saber & Half Life Alyx via the apple vision pro.
