Welcome to Mouth Harp Monday! Every other Monday I will be sharing a new look at an Indonesian mouth harp tradition, most of which I've never shared here. Whether they're string-pulled bamboo varieties or metal "jew's harps," each instrument and its player has a story, and I'm here to tell it.
The Javanese mouth harp, rinding, is now incredibly rare, being played by only a handful of men and women across Central and East Java. This variety, from Lumajang, an area on the southeast coast of the island, has never been fully documented or researched until now! In this video, Pak Sutimbang shows off his solo technique, which takes inspiration from local percussive music and dance like glipang and terbangan.
