Today we’re taking a look at the newly announced Fujifilm GFX 50S II. Fujifilm’s goal with the GFX 50S II is to package that medium format sensor in a camera that is affordable and compact, at least compared to other medium format systems.
The body of the 50S II is actually identical to the GFX 100S. It’s quite a bit smaller than the original 50S in all dimensions. It’s not much larger than most full frame DSLRs, if at all. It’s a fully weatherproof magnesium alloy construction that feels exceedingly solid, and the grip provides a nice balanced handhold. It has a 3-way touchscreen that tilts and flips to one side, although not all the way around. There’s a very large and clear top LCD panel with pertinent information, and you can even change the display to show digital dials, or even a real-time histogram. You can also choose reverse colouring for easier reading in different conditions. There’s an 8-direction joystick , and a 3.69 million dot viewfinder. Note that viewfinder is stationary and not removable like it was on the original 50S. There’s also a mode dial with 6 different custom settings. The camera has mic and headphone jacks, plus USB-C, micro HDMI and PC Sync ports, and dual UHS-II compatible SD card slots. It uses a new battery compared to the original 50S, the NP-W235, which improves battery life. And it can be charged via the USB-C port, which is also new. A new GFX lens has also been announced, the 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.
Of course the big headline of any GFX camera is the medium format sensor inside of it. The sensor on the Fujifilm GFX 50S II is 1.7 times the size of a standard full frame sensor. This provides more shallow depth of field and better low light performance when compared to full frame. The GFX 50S II also 14 stops of dynamic range.
Medium format cameras are popular with photographers who want maximum detail and quality in their images, and this is certainly evident on the GFX 50S II. The picture quality is very high, and exceeds what you can achieve on a full frame camera. The GFX 50S II sensor is 50 MP, hence the name. The 50S II also includes Fujifilm’s Pixel Shift Multi Shot mode, which combines a series of images together into a single 205 MP image.
The GFX 50S II has up to 6.5 stops of In Body Image Stabilisation, which is a big deal considering the original 50S did not have IBIS. At 6.5 stops, that’s even half a stop more than the IBIS on the GFX 100. That’s a big win and will make shooting handheld for both stills and video much more stable, resulting in better low light performance and more professional results overall.
The GFX 50S II has Rapid Contrast Rapid.This is a similar system to the original 50S, but the 50S II does now have a quad-core processor, which improves performance. It’s acceptably fast, although high speed shooting is not really the purpose of this camera, so it’s not going to compete with a more sports-focused camera. It can shoot 3 fps with continuous shooting
A great feature on almost all Fujifilm cameras is access to their excellent film simulations, based on their long history of film production. That is certainly present here, and you can shoot in Provia, Velvia, Astia, and so on. There’s actually a new film simulation added here, called Nostalgic Negative. This is based on the American New Colour film that was available from the 1970’s to the 90’s
The GFX 50S II shoots full HD at up to 30 fps. Since it’s not a 4K camera, it’s clear this isn’t really a camera built around video shooting, but you do have that mic and headphone jacks for external microphones, so if you can get creative as long as you don’t mind shooting in 1080.
Overall, the main purpose of the GFX 50S II is to package that huge medium format sensor in a camera that is compact and affordable. With a 50 MP sensor, 6.5 stops of in body image stabilization, 200 MP images via the Multi Shot mode, competent autofocus, improved battery life, access to Fujifilm’s film simulations and an overall compact package, the Fujifilm GFX 50S II is the perfect jumping off point for anyone who has been interested in medium format photography but hasn’t pulled the trigger yet, or for those who own the original 50S and are looking for an upgrade.
