France's provincial government administrators (prefects) called joint meetings with civic groups and Jewish leaders to discuss measures against resurgent anti - semitism. However, the country's largest labour union boycotted the meetings as a "political manouevre". In spite of repeated calls by President Giscard D'estaing for national unity and solidarity in the face of growing racist attacks, the left is clinging to its accusations that the synagogue bombing and other anti - Jewish acts of violence would not have occurred if the authorities had cracked down on the right.
