After 30 years of travel I'd have to say The Azores Islands way off the west of Portugal are the most beautiful, unspoiled islands I've seen, particularly Flores island. Together with Iceland and New Zealand they round out my top 3 places for stunning, natural beauty.
REMOTE:
The Azores consists of 9 main islands islands and are about 1,500 klm off the west coast of Europe. In fact, go another 2000 klm and you reach Canada, so they are incredibly remote.
QUIET:
São Miguel Island is by far the busiest with 140,00 inhabitants but some of the other islands have very small populations, like Flores (4,000 locals), and Corvo (only 500 people live there!)
LUSH:
Thanks to the mild temperatures and high rainfall the islands are incredibly green in summer. The amount of wild Hydrangeas and Yellow Ginger-Lilly lining the roads, particullarly in Flores has to be seen to be believed.
