Carbon fiber is a miraculous substance, light but incredibly strong, but it’s also extremely expensive to produce and difficult to recycle, meaning that vast amounts end up in landfills every year. Andrew Maxey, founder of Vartega CFR, explains his chemistry-based process for pulling apart scrap carbon fiber and recycling it to create carbon fiber derivatives that are half the cost of virgin fiber, requiring as much as 90% less energy.
