This is guitarist Jim Mullen's phenomenal solo on the live version of Jobim's 'Meditation' performed by the Gene Harris Quartet.
This is a particular favourite of mine and a great example of JM's art.
Being self taught as Jim Mullen was and the owner of amazing musical and physiological gifts, this solo, though not especially difficult to transcribe the notes of, throws up all sorts of challenges to interpret:
I've wanted to, for as long as I've been listening to and loving his unique style and playing, to try to emulate the 'sound' of his phrasing, rhythmic inventiveness and effortless fluency.
Saying it is the easy part!!
I haven't even mentioned the thumb yet:
Unlike Wes Montgomery - who famously also used his thumb to great affect - Jim utilises only down strokes to conjure up all that magic!
Now, as a performer on classical guitar, I am no stranger to using that particular digit in acquitting my duties, but it bears absolutely no resemblance to the way JM uses his.
That, as well as the very particular way Jim Mullen employs his left hand (more about all of this and more in the follow up tutorial video) made the task of trying to get as close as I possibly could to emulating the glorious combination of all these 'quirks' a considerable undertaking.
I am glad I persevered!
But please be kind if you think I deserve a scolding for even attempting the impossible!
The backing track is my own.
